Requirements for Certification
Track I Path
Bachelor or higher degree with a major or emphasis in therapeutic recreation, including coursework as follows:
–Fifteen (15) semester units or twenty (20) quarter units of therapeutic recreation theory and practice content courses (no activity courses); AND
–Nine (9) semester units or twelve (12) quarter units of recreation theory and practice courses AND
–Completion of a minimum of eighteen (18) semester units or twenty-seven (27) quarter units of coursework related to understanding human functioning and development. Courses are required from at least three of the following subject areas: adapted physical. education, social services, psychology, special education, criminal justice, counseling, life development, motor development or learning, anatomy, and physiology, or etiology of (Note: no more than six (6) semester units will be accepted from any one (1) area.),  AND
–Completion of a minimum of five hundred sixty hours (560) of fieldwork/internship experience, verified by the college or university transcripts, in a therapeutic recreation The agency supervisor must be currently certified by CTRAC or NCTRC, have been certified for a minimum of one year, and have worked as a therapeutic recreation specialist in the current agency for a minimum of one year.
Track II Path
–Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies, or other discipline related to human functioning AND
–Two years of full-time employment or four thousand (4000) total hours paid employment within the last 5 years in a therapeutic recreation setting utilizing the TR process AND verified by a therapeutic recreation specialist employed by that agency during the period of
–The applicant must complete fifteen (15) units or twenty (20) quarter units of therapeutic recreation theory and practice
–If TR coursework is more than 5 years old, you must have completed 4 CEUs or 40 contact hours in the past 4 years related to the Body of Knowledge found at ctractexas.org.

Examination and Certification Details
The examination is given four times a year and given at several locations throughout the state.  A passing score of 70% is required. The reexamination fee is $75.00.
Certificatants passing the examination are certified and valid for two years and must be renewed. At the time of renewal an email notification will be sent, and submission of two (2.0) continuing education units (CEUs) or equivalent academic credits is required to maintain certification status and
$75.00 renewal fee.
CEUs may be earned by attending 20 hours of continuing education courses in the two (2) year period.

Step 1

Complete the Application and payment form

DO NOT submit the examination fee at this time examinee’s application must be reviewed and approved documentation will be emailed/or mailed out to applicants when the sitting fee is required

Step 2

When the application has successfully passed the review process an email will be sent with the application review and examination dates and sites. The Examination fee is due and payable if the applicant is eligible for examination. Notice, including a deadline for payment, will be sent. This fee is non-refundable but may be applied to the next examination cycle if the applicant is unable to take the examination and notify the CTRAC office, not less than (10) working days before the examination date.

Re-examination fee, or no-show: $75.00

The application and examination fees are not refundable.
After that time, your files will be discarded, you are no longer considered eligible to take the examination, and be required to meet the current standards for certification.
