CTRAC Certification Standards

LEVELS

CTRAC certifies on Three  Levels

  • Therapeutic Recreation Specialist–TRS/TXC
  • Therapeutic Recreation Associate–TRA/TXC
  • Activity Director                                       –AD/TXC

TRACKS

Each of these levels has differing TRACKS to help you obtain your certification.  Each of these TRACKS has at minimum, three qualifying components:

  • Academic Education
  • Activity Experience
  • Continuing Education
  • CTRAC Education Courses for Activity Professionals Part I and II

Academic Education

May derive from a wide variety of curricula:  Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation, Activity Director Courses, or Related Fields.

Recreation/or Activity Experience

Recreation/or Activity work experience, some volunteer may be applied.

Continuing Education

Current continuing education (within past 2 years):  workshops, seminars, and college courses that keep the recreation/or activity professional abreast of present trends.  CTRAC’s Body of Knowledge contains areas of education with many applicable subheadings.

CTRAC Education Courses for Activity Professionals Part I and II:  192 hours of educational learning and 192 hours of experiential learning (practicum), are required for CTRAC certification.  CTRAC Education Courses for Activity Professionals Part I and II are (generally presented/taught) divided into two teaching portions of 96 hours each.

  • CTRAC Education Course for Activity Professionals Part I:  prepares students for the basic functions and duties of an activity professional:  to design, deliver, and evaluate services for older adults across the continuum of care.
  • CTRAC Education Course for Activity Professionals Part II:  prepares students to apply principles of management in their role as activity professionals:  to provide service through leadership, using principles of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling.

FEES

The cost of being certified initially is a $100.00 application fee and a $75.00 examination fee.  Renewal is required every two years with 2.0 continuing education units/or 20 contact hours for a fee of $75.00
