Activity Directors work with individuals receiving long term care. They are trained in geriatrics, therapeutic interventions and diversion activities to provide the Activity Professional with a strong base of knowledge, as well as the necessary skills and techniques to provide therapeutic activity services to clients and residents in a long term care setting.

Therapeutic recreation assistants use recreation services and leisure experiences to increase or maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals. Activities may include sports, games, dance, drama, arts and crafts, and music, as well as community outings. Therapeutic recreation assistants work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, prisons, nursing homes, schools, and residential facilities, among other locations.

VC’s Workforce & Continuing Education Department offers training courses for a career as a Long-Term Care Activity Director. Activity directors oversee recreational activities among elderly or special needs populations. This 11-week training will provide you with the state-mandated training necessary to work as a qualified activity professional. You will also be prepared to become eligible for certification as required by the Texas Department of Human Services for nursing home/extended care facilities in Texas.
