CTRAC Certification Standards

Welcome to the CTRAC certification process!
LEVELS
CTRAC Certifies On Three LEVELS:

  1. Therapeutic Recreation Specialist–TRS/TXC
  2. Therapeutic Recreation Associate–TRA/TXC
  3. Activity Director                              –AD/TXC

TRACKS
Each of these levels has differing TRACKS to help you obtain your certification.
Each of these TRACKS has, at minimum, three qualifying components:

A. Academic Education
B. Activity Experience
C. Continuing Education
D. CTRAC Education Courses for Activity Professionals Part I and II

A.  Academic Education                                                                                                 May derive from a wide variety of curriculums: Therapeutic Recreation,                   Recreation, Activity Director Courses or Related Field.

B.  Recreation/or Activity Experience
Recreation/or Activity work experience, some volunteer experience may be applied.

C. Continuing Education
Current continuing education (within past 2 years): workshops, seminars, college courses that keep the recreation/or activity professional abreast of present trends. CTRAC’s Body of Knowledge contains areas of education with many subheadings that are applicable.

D. CTRAC Education Courses for Activity Professionals Part I and II  192 hours of educational learning and 192 hours of experiential learning (practicum), and is required for CTRAC certification. CTRAC Education Courses for Activity Professionals Part I and II are (generally presented/taught) divided into 2 teaching portions of 96 hours each.

  • CTRAC Education Course for Activity Professionals Part I: prepares students for the basic functions and duties of an activity professional: to design, deliver, and evaluate services for older adults across the continuum of care.
  • CTRAC Education Course for Activity Professionals Part II: prepares students to apply principles of management in their role as activity professional: to provide service through leadership, using principles of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling.

FEES
The cost of being certified initially is $75.00 application fee and a $ 50.00 examination fee.  Renewal is required every two years with 2.0 continuing education units/or 20 contact hours and a fee of $50.00
